Have you ever wanted to try a juice cleanse but were too nervous to go for it? Or maybe you just don’t have enough information on what it really is and what to expect? Well don’t you worry – I have got you covered! It will either be the make-it-or-break-it factor for your juice cleanse journey. Now that I have you thinking, lets just dive in!
I heard about this company in Calgary called CRU Juice – they produce raw organic cold pressed juice that you are able to purchase individually or in a cleanse set. This was my first time ever doing a cleanse and to be honest I didn’t know much about it. Hearing nothing but good things, my friend and I decided we were going to do it. Nervous about how we were going to feel, questioning if it really is worth the money and skeptical whether or not we will feel any different, we decided to go for it. The cleanse we went with was the 3-Day Deep Cleanse that we picked up Tuesday night to start Wednesday morning.
Why do a juice cleanse?
Everyone has a different reason for wanting to do a cleanse. Personally I was at a halt. I felt like I needed something to kick start my body as I had recently changed up our workouts but still there was just something missing. That’s when we decided, how about a cleanse?
How do I prepare leading up to the first day of the cleanse?
Water, water, water, make it your best friend, get used to drinking a lot of water. It’s really important to stay hydrated as well as getting your body used to consuming lots of liquid.
What will my first day look like?
You have 6 juices that you need to consume through out the day. They do not give you specific hours of the day that you need to drink them, but they do however, label them 1 through 6 so you know in what order to drink them.
The first day is exciting! You don’t know what any of them taste like and to be honest the fact that you’re ONLY consuming raw organic fruits and veggies makes you feel pretty darn healthy!
What kinds of juice will I be drinking on the cleanse?
It depends on when you order and what juices they are making that week. That being said, if you are doing the Deep Cleanse with Cru Juice, you will have 4 green juices, one nut mylk and one citrus juice. The juices we had included:
- 50 Shades of Green x2: Romaine, Pineapple, Orange, Fennel, Spinach and Cilantro
- #Greenjuice x2: Green apple, Cucumber, Kale, Celery, Parsley, Ginger, Lemon and Chlorella
- Bad Boy Brown: Almonds, Cashews, Dates, Raw Cacao, Raw Honey, Maca Root and Sea Salt
- Dirty Lemonade: Lemon, Raw Sugar Cane, Bentonite Clay and Activated Charcoal
Like I said earlier, the first day we were so excited to taste them, that they all seemed pretty good. When the second day came around…in all honesty…I did not like the green juices and I had to literally chug them as fast as I could and cheer myself on in my office (its an acquired taste!). Now the Nut and Citrus ones were so dang delicious it was worth drinking the green ones you had to drink leading up to these two. The Nut one tasted like almond chocolate milk, although when I got my boyfriend to try it he looked at me and said “that ain’t no chocolate milk”, but I mean, come on all I am drinking is veggies all day!! The dirty lemonade was so good thatI could pour that over ice on a nice summer day – it was that yummy.
Okay, seriously, is it going to feel like I am starving myself for 3 days?
Now if you know anything about me it’s that I love food and I literally eat all the time. I was so worried I was going to waste all this money because I wouldn’t be able to last even one day without eating. I can honestly say that you get so full by the end of your day that you forget you can’t eat solid foods. I drank lots and lots of water between my juices, which really helped feelings of hunger to subside when I started to feel hungry in the afternoons. It was enough to carry me through until my next juice drink.
Can I work out for the three days?
Totally! Get your sweat on…you wont be able to do the vigorous workout that you may be used to (heavy leg day is a no-no for these three days!) so we modified some regular workouts. This is what we did:
- Day 1: 35-minute core workout.
- Day 2 and 3: Short run with a body weight circuit at the end.
What if I have cravings?
Not going to lie – it will happen and food will have never looked so darn delicious! I had cravings when my boyfriend, Tanner, would be eating dinner and I’m sitting there drinking my juice just drooling over his food. I found always keeping a water bottle with me helped as I could just chug some water and fill my tummy when I was craving food. Most of my cravings were around dinner time, so having that Nut Mylk at dinner really helped as it was full of protein and very fulfilling.
Am I going to have any energy at the end of my day?
Surprisingly, yes! I was shocked at how much energy I had throughout the three days. I was expecting to crash on the second night but I truly felt strong and was able to workout in the evening and function at my job for all three days.
How often do I drink the 6 juices?
This is how I set up my drinking schedule:
- Drink me First – 9am when I got to work
- Do me 02 – 1pm for my lunch
- Down me 03 – An hour before leaving work, around 4:30pm
- Devour me 04 – Right when I got home from my workout, around 8pm
- Drain Me 05 – 9pm
- Done 06 – 10pm 30 minutes before I went to bed
How many calories in a day will I consume?
Approximately 1200-1800 calories, but it all depends on the drinks you receive.
Can I have anything else other than 6 juices and water?
As a matter a fact you can! Herbal tea in the morning or lemon water is a great way to start your day to wake up your system (Hey, at least its better then nothing!). Also, the more you drink, the more pit stops at the washroom!
Would you recommend doing it alone or having a partner?
It’s only three days and it may not seem like a long time, but trust me – having a friend or family member to do it with really helps keep you on track. I went on this journey with my friend and we were in constant communication with each other for the full three days and encouraged each other the whole way. The both of us committed to it, supported each other and came out with positive results.
Anything negatives about this that I should be prepared for?
- You will have to pee so much it will start to get on your nerves (especially when it’s 3am and your getting up to go to the washroom!).
- Prepare yourself for not enjoying all the drinks! Keep them refrigerated at all times for freshness, plus really cold juice just tastes better.
- You will get this weird film or residue on your teeth (result of any raw diet) so I brushed my teeth with a wet toothbrush during the day to ensure I kept them as clean as possible.
How am I going to feel once I successfully finish these 3 days?
The results will be different for everyone but for me I felt so amazing. What really made me feel amazing was that I didn’t feel like I starved myself. I felt like I gave my body a break and it had time to really detox itself.
No bloating…I felt slim in my waist and stomach and honestly noticed a difference in the way I looked. I felt like I accomplished so much doing this and it gave me that extra push and motivation to stick to a clean diet (I still have those days to enjoy those guilty pleasure foods).
Honestly, too, my cravings became different; I craved salads, chicken, fruit, all sorts of veggies etc. It was like my body was used to all this nutrients I had been getting! I was shocked the way I felt and how aware I became of portions, balance and how often I really should be eating. Oh and my work outs after the cleanse were AMAZING I got the kick start I needed!
I hope this gives you a little insight on what a cleanse can look like.
Remember everyone is different and your journey will be unique to you!
